School Visits
The Society includes teachers amongst its membership who have helped develop our school visits programme. We can offer school visits in most areas of Ireland by enthusiastic, experienced and knowledgeable personnel in full, accurate period dress who can lead the children in activities based around the National Curriculum framework. We provide either a full day of interactive activities, or a short demonstration of our equipment and skills.
We can design our visits to meet the School Curriculum.
The Society also provides resources for schools, including a teacher's resource book. In some cases, clothing and equipment can be loaned to schools for short periods to assist in classroom work. A charge is made to cover insurance costs etc.
Gaill Glais provides an enjoyable and participative approach to history, transforming it from information in books to a hands-on experience. We provide an interactive and educational approach to history in a variety of venues including schools, libraries, public events and functions.
What we do.
We come to your school bringing a Historical display of uniforms and clothing, weapons and tools of the ages, therefore creating History you can touch.
Coupled with a talk on a specific period of History, chosen by you, this creates a truly unique and Hans On experience of history. Using the excitement and energy of a combat display your students will truly be stepping back in time.
Books provide a “map-like” experience of history, we provide a “real-life” experience. History you can touch, leaves all with a greater understanding and appreciation of history.
A typical school presentation consists of:
· Display of Kit and Uniform – the presenter comes in character wearing uniform/kit.
· Talk on Kit, uniform and specific period and way of life.
· Question and Answer session. (Quiz)
· Interactive Hands On session, where students get to touch, hold and explore historical kit and uniforms.
· Some schools opt for a combat display.*
· Some schools opt for an interactive “drill” display. **
